Blue John Veins

Although all Blue John Stone comes from a single hillside, just outside Castleton in the Derbyshire Peak District National Park, it is not found as a single mass. Rather, it is found in veins. Each vein has its own characteristic colour and banding. Not only is Blue John a unique Derbyshire mineral but the different veins give a great variety to this stone.

Tradition has it that there are fourteen named veins, but in reality, each vein is so variable that there are many more than fourteen varieties of Blue John.
